Bridging Physical Distances Through Music and Design
The Challenge
The challenge was to develop a one hour audiovisual performance for Public Access, the digital streaming platform launched by Brooklyn venue Public Records during the 2020 lockdown. For an episode of the "In Your Dirty Ears" residency curated by Amelia Holt, the objective was to collaborate with Yellow Island Records label head Albin. The project required translating his musical narrative into a cohesive visual experience designed to comfort, engage, and reduce physical distances.

Operating under the collective moniker .KRW, a partnership with visual artist Henrico Lavoura was formed to create a custom motion design piece. The solution involved crafting an evolving visual storyline that mirrored the progression of the mix. Prioritizing human intent over algorithmic automation during a period of intense isolation, the visuals were meticulously hand synced to the music. This deliberate manual approach was utilized to establish a deeper and genuinely human connection between the sound and the visuals within the digital environment.
The Result
The broadcast platform functioned as a temporary digital gathering space for the community during a period of strict physical distancing. The one hour mix delivered a grounded audiovisual experience that resonated with the listeners, facilitating active interaction and shared moments in the live chat. Rather than attempting to replace the physical club experience, the project offered a careful, human driven visual complement to Albin's musical narrative, respecting the delicate context of the time and providing a genuine point of connection.
The Visual Concept was designed to evolve directly alongside the audio mix, encapsulated entirely within a unified aesthetic resembling an old glitchy CRT monitor. The visual narrative begins with abstract, organic elements inspired by nature to establish a foundational atmosphere. As the musical selection transitions into heavier electronic sounds, the abstract contents progressively shift into more digital and futuristic textures. This deliberate progression captures the duality of Albin's sound, keeping the viewer visually anchored to the musical journey.
The Technical Execution demanded a rigorous manual approach to maintain the intended human touch. The entire one hour visual performance was synchronized by hand, beat by beat, rather than depending on standard generative algorithms. This non automated process ensured every transition and visual cue felt deeply intentional and strictly connected to the storyline developed with the artist.
