Synthesizing Four Years of Label History
The Challenge
The objective was to create a motion piece for the track "Monochromatic" from Brazilian producer Nørus's debut EP "Forbidden Colors", released by the Estonian label Gestalt Records. The project needed to visually translate the dusty, introspective atmosphere of the track/EP while honoring the artist's roots in São Paulo. A specific requirement from the label and artist was to reinterpret a classic visual convention of the international lo-fi house scene to create something unique for this release.

The execution embraced the established lo-fi house aesthetic of vintage urban car rides, but applied it to an unexplored context. Recognizing that this recurring theme had rarely featured Brazilian cities, the project was built entirely from curated archival footage of São Paulo streets recorded during the 1980s and early 1990s. To achieve the ideal visual rhythm, the workflow required a precise collaboration between automated systems and human intent. To unify the diverse analog sources and reflect the track's title, a monochromatic blue color grade was applied across the entire piece.
The Result
While the motion piece served as a highly effective promotional centerpiece for Gestalt Records, its primary achievement was establishing a distinct visual presence for Brazil within the lo-fi house culture. Although Brazilian producers like Nørus himself played significant roles in the movement, the country lacked the geographic representation traditionally dominated by US and European cities. The project successfully placed São Paulo on the map for this specific aesthetic, filling a cultural gap. This impact was directly reflected in audience engagement, with members of the community and viewers actively recognizing the streets and feeling a genuine sense of belonging to the movement.
The post production workflow demanded a precise balance between automated systems and human sensibility. The curated VHS archival clips were heavily processed, retexturized, and made audio reactive through automation to generate a continuous and immersive visual flow. Conversely, to achieve the perfect narrative rhythm, every single transition and scene cut was executed entirely manually, beat by beat. This deliberate collaboration between machine generated textures and human driven editing ensured the final piece remained strictly anchored to the musicality of the track.
