Synthesizing Four Years of Label History
The Challenge
The challenge was to conceptualize and execute a promotional motion piece for the four year anniversary of Nerang Recordings. The project needed to celebrate the label's evolution from its Australian origins to its current role in the Berlin electronic scene. The primary requirement was to visually synthesize a diverse catalog of past release artworks while simultaneously launching a new merchandise collaboration with the art collective Germes Gang.
The Solution
The execution utilized a dynamic motion design approach to match the label's intense and raw identity. The video was structured to function as a high speed digital archive, bringing the static vinyl artworks to life within a slot machine inspired composition. To introduce the new merchandise, the motion graphics integrated the signature aesthetic of Germes Gang, ensuring the promotional elements aligned seamlessly with the label's visual culture.
The Result
The final motion piece successfully consolidated four years of musical and visual output into a cohesive promotional asset. The video effectively engaged the audience across social platforms, driving visibility for both the historical catalog and the new collaborative merchandise. The project reinforced Nerang Recordings' reputation for originality and boundary pushing aesthetics within the global independent electronic music community.
The entire video is constructed as a visual and conceptual collage. The editing intentionally contrasts different kinds of footage and mediums, from historical engravings and archival interviews to modern, cinematic portraits. The collage approach serves as the central metaphor for the piece: building a new, successful present by acknowledging and weaving in the threads of the past.
The final motion sequence is set to a powerful interpretation of a classic samba by the legendary Leci Brandão, sung by the iconic voice of Seu Jorge. Over a subtly textured background, the 'dàgbá' logo animates on screen, punctuated by a dynamic, hand-painted red brush stroke. This pairing of a culturally-rooted anthem with a clean, modern logo animation was designed to honor the past while inviting a new generation to rewrite the future, ending the piece on a final, human note.
